This tutorial shows you how to make text look as if it’s turning into sand and blowing away. Only part of the text appears to dissolve, creating a drifting particle effect.
Step 1: Change Layer Settings
Type your text.
In the Layers panel, right-click the text layer and choose Convert to Smart Object.
Set the layer’s Blend Mode to Dissolve.
Step 2: Apply a Field Blur
Go to Filter > Blur Gallery > Field Blur.
Click on the image to place pins that control blur strength.
Increase the blur value on areas you want to scatter.
Decrease the value on areas you want to remain sharp.
Drag the gray circle around each pin to adjust blur, or use the right-hand panel to enter values directly.
Press Delete to remove any unwanted pins.
When you’re satisfied, click OK to apply the effect.
Step 3: Fine-Tune with a Layer Mask (Optional)
Select the Smart Object’s layer mask.
Paint with a black brush to reduce the effect in areas where you want less scattering.
And that’s it—your text now fades and breaks apart like drifting sand or dust in the air.
